Why do people consider it a bad idea to get an extended warranty?
I bought an MP3 player in December 2005. Following everyone's advice I did not get the extended warranty covering everything. I dropped the thing 4 months later and broke it. Had I got the freakin' insurance I would have been fine. I had to buy another one. To this day I continue kicking myself in the ass over that one.
I'm asking now because I plan on buying a $2,000 laptop and I will certainly be getting the extended warranty. I don' t care how much extra it is.
I'm taking about the Best Buy warranties that cover everything.

Because if you drop your laptop, that extended warranty won't cover it. That's the big kicker… most of the problems you'll have, will be problems that you caused by adding software, abusing the system, or maybe trying to upgrade. Chances are, whatever happens to it won't be covered. An Extended Warranty is NOT insurance.
On a car, your warranty covers defects in the manufacturing. But you have insurance to cover your own mistakes. It works the same way here.
I'm heading to the bestbuy website right now, for another reason altogether, and i'll take a look at it. If it REALLY does cover damage you do to it yourself, then it might not be such a bad idea.

I ALWAYS get extended warranty cause you just never know! People tell me it is a waste of money also but I'd rather be safe than sorry. My one friend told me that she never gets the extended warranty because the manufacturers make the product so that it will last the amount of time that they list for the extended warranty. So if you purchase 4 years of warranty it will last 4 years and then start to break after that time period. Weird theory if you ask me! My boyfriend and I always always always get extended warranty…you can join us!
